Seed germination

Due to the fact that dry seeds have slowly biochemical processes, many of them maintain their viability for a number of years. It should, however, be mentioned that many of the plants very quickly (within a few days, and sometimes months) lose their germination, e. g. willow and poplar. Birch retains it a little longer, but no more than a year. Other plants, such as cucurbits, retain their germination for a long time. Yet in most plant germination decreases each year, and why it is not recommended to sow seeds stored for several years.

Especially long retain their germination seeds coated with thick shell. There is information that lotus seeds retained their germination for nearly a millennium in the peat. Information about maintaining the germination of wheat seeds that had lain a few thousand years in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs is based on the error. Wheat remains the germination of not more than ten — fifteen years. Taken from http://worldofschool.org

During germination of the seeds first germinates root, and then begins to germinate gemmule. Grasses germinate by a special sharp feather — coleoptile, which pierces the soil and protects the first leaf in it. In many dicots, during germination of the seed, the stem breaks through the soil in the form of a curved arc, and only after it crawled out of the soil, the first leaves straighten. Very often, the cotyledons lift to the surface right after the stem, as it is in the case of the bean or sunflower. In pea cotyledons remain in the ground. In order to get good and strong shoots, we must have good seeds for sowing. For planting a large, high-grade seeds should always be taken that grow in a more powerful and productive plants. The first thing you have to do is to take away any excess rubbish, and in the production of grain crops should be subjected to cleaning in the special grain cleaning machines. The seeds should not contain impurities of weed seeds and various contaminants. Damaged seeds are not suitable for sowing.

Depending on the size of the seeds there is different depth of soil incorporation. The smaller the seed, the shallower the depth to which they should be sown.
