In plant growth great importance have growth hormones (phytohormones). These substances unlike vitamins do not have nutritional functions. They influence primarily on protoplasm of young fetal cells, causing changes in it, ultimately resulting complex phenomena in cells, such as growth of shell and cell division.

Growth hormones are formed by flowing metabolism in a plant cell. They are derivatives of living organism and play a supporting rather than a basis function in the growth processes of the plant.

The growth of the plants takes place only in the presence of a number of conditions. This requires: light, suitable temperature and humidity of the soil, the presence of organic and mineral nutrients, a certain pH value, etc. In complex of all these conditions a big role is played by growth hormones, having specialized function in growth processes just as enzymes. With growth hormones (auxins) increases cell wall plasticity of the plant. This is, apparently, the role of auxin and particularly of heteroauxin β-indolyl-acetic acid (IAA), having the composition C10H9O3N). A pivotal role in the stimulation of cell division and in increase in ductility, as in shell extensibility, is ascribed to IAA, although the mechanism affecting the shell is still unclear.

It is interesting that, in addition to hormones, plant growth can have a stimulating effect and synthetic substances, called plant growth stimulants.

These agents include compounds such as: α-naphthyl-acetic acid, β-indolyl-butyric acid, etc., which are not found in plants.
