Correlation in plants

Correlation — is quite a variety of phenomena in the plant world. It may be noted two types of correlation in plant organisms.

Hereditary correlation

First of all, correlation means the presence of certain connection between one or another morphological feature and physiological, biochemical and biological properties of the plant, manifested in his individual development (ontogeny). Such correlation may be called a hereditary type of correlation.

They have been used by I. V. Michurin in the selection of hybrid seedlings of perennial fruit plants. Characteristic morphological feature of the future varieties with valuable features of the first selection in apples is the presence of large cotyledons. During the second selection it is recommended to select items with short and thick petioles and large leaf blades having a rounded and shallow serration and dense pubescent. After leaf falling off, the selection carries on by the size and shape of the buds, which must have large and round shape. The dark color of the crust is a sign of late ripening. The following selection is made in the autumn of the third year by the same features, and the fourth — already by fruit bearing. Taken from http://worldofschool.org

Growth correlation

The second type of correlation can be called correlations of growth that characterizes as a direct physiological relationship of individual organs or body parts. This correlation type includes, for example, the interaction between the apical and lateral growth points. If you cut the apical bud, one of the lateral buds give a strong vertical shoots, which is kind of replaces the apical shoot. When pruning trees many dormant buds wake up and start to grow. This technique is widely used in gardening and landscaping the cities to enhance the branching of fruit and wood species of trees.
