Classifying animals

In animal classification, as in the classification of plants, the basic unit is species. Species is a group of individuals having the same structure and vital processes that can interbreed with one another freely and produce fertile offspring. Animal species are combined into genera, genera — in the family, the family — in orders, orders — in classes and classes — in phylums.

Let’s take a look at animal classifying example.

Birds, which you often call crows, actually belong to different species: jackdaw, crow, rook, gray raven. All these species are united in the genus Corvus. Close “relatives” of the genus Corvus are birds belonging to the genus Pica, Garrulus, Nucifraga. These genera form a family Corvidae.

What order has the family Corvidae? Corvidae with families Paridae, Hirundinidae, Fringillidae, Emberizidae and many other families are united in Passeriformes order. Numerous birds of this group are well known to you. Relatives of are Passeriformes are birds from Strigiformes, Anseriformes, Pelecaniformes and other orders, also belonging to the Aves class.

Aves class is part of the Chordata phylum, it includes several more classes. Among them are: the Mammalia class (dogs, dolphins, elephants, mice), Amphibia class (frogs, salamanders), Reptilia class (snakes, lizards, crocodiles), Osteichthyes class (perch, sturgeon, bream, herring).

In addition to the Chordata phylum, scholars identify the Arthropoda phylum (spiders, insects, crabs), Mollusca phylum (squid, snails, mussels), Annelida phylum (earthworms, leeches), Coelenterata phylum (anemones, corals) and about twenty more types of animals. They are all united in the Animalia kingdom.

Thus, any animal in Animalia kingdom has a definite place, in other words, has its own “systematic” address. Gray crows have: the Animalia kingdom, Chordata phylum, Aves class, Passeriformes order, Corvidae family, Corvus genus, Corvus tristis species. Taken from http://worldofschool.org

We have considered only the major taxonomic groups of animals, or as they are called by scientists, systematic classification. Additional categories are also used in the classification (subkingdoms, subtypes, superclasses, and so on. d.). For example, the animal kingdom is divided into two subkingdoms: multicellular and protozoa (single celled). Superclass Pisces consists of several classes: among them the Osteichthyes class and Chondrichthyes class.

Questions:
  • Which statement is correct: “Rooks and crows belong to the same species of animals” or “Rooks and crows belong to the same order of animals?”

  • What animals belong to the Corvidae family, to Passeriformes order, to Aves class.

  • What animal classes are in Chordata phylum?

  • Name some animals of Coelenterata phylum, Mollusca phylum, Chordata phylum.

  • Find famous animals among arthropods. Find out what class they belong to.

  • Determine the phylums and classes, which include a frog, a lobster, and a jellyfish.
